Nokia leads dual-SIM mobile phone market in India: Report

I thought Nokia will soon shut shop after rivals becoming giant everywhere. Did you also thought alike?

Well, Nokia is making a comeback in Indian market atleast in the low-end segment. The recent rupee depreciation compelled the Indian phone brands to hike the price of low-end models, thereby losing the market grip. Nokia not only made a comeback in the low-end segment but has also gained a remarkable lead in the dual-SIM phones segment. According to a media research, multi-SIM shipments accounted 54 per cent of the total handsets market during November 2011 in the country. Nokia is leading the race with 19 per cent market share, followed by Micromax (7.1 per cent) and Karbonn (6.9 per cent).

According to the report, Nokia also managed to cope with the foreign exchange fluctuation as it mainly sources components for the low end phones from local market. On the other hand, the Indian phone makers such as Maxx Mobile, Lava, Micromax and Karbon were forced to increase price as the components of their phones are sourced from China and other Asian nations.

Ajjay Agarwal, Chairman & Managing Director, Maxx Group acknowledged that the rupee depreciations in recent months had made adverse impact on their market share. He also pointed out that other Indian manufacturers had to increase price to keep their profit margins safe. According to reports, a number of Indian and Chinese mobile handset players have witnessed a significant dip in shipments.

Nokia has launched as many as seven phones including the Asha series in the dual-SIM category. It may be recalled that Nokia had lost a significant ground of late after local handset manufacturers such as Mircomax joined the fray. Nokia's market share had dipped from nearly 60 per cent to less than 30 per cent, mainly because it didn't have dual-SIM phones in the market. According to reports, Indian brands grabbed some 25 per cent share from Nokia.
The market is interesting and worth tracking. Few changes and balance shifts to other side. I believe with Nokia brand power and steardy phones, regaining market share for Indian brands would be tough even if Rupee see upward trend.

Symbian OS goes to Accenture

Nokia will have very little indeed to do with its formerly beloved Symbian OS. Oh sure, the company promises to keep it going with such standout devices as the Oro, but responsibility for developing and supporting Symbian is being wholly handed over to Accenture, along with 2,800 employees. When announced back in April, the deal called for 3,000 Nokia worker bees to make the jump over, so we suspect a few more (hopefully voluntary) redundancies are making up the difference with the new number. Now that everything's been finalized, you can expect the switchover to take place in "the early part of October." Accenture promises to care for its ailing patient through 2016, after which point even the most die-hard of fans will have to make the switch to a mobile OS from the 21st century.

DOT radar now on Nokia push mail services

After partially getting RIM to allow them monitoring access to the BlackBerry Mail service, the Government of India has turned its attention to Nokia's Push Mail services. The government wants Nokia to set up a method that will allow government and security agencies to access telephone numbers, device ids, email IDs, IP addresses and keywords, on a real time basis. This is much in line with what RIM had to do, recently.

RIM integrated a satisfactory solution to intercept the enterprise mail services, which has been already expired. After a comfortable run for such activated services for the consumers, DoT has decided to clamp down on communication via channels like the Blackberry Enterprise push mail services, calling it a security risk. The security agencies want access to all incoming or outgoing content, both to monitor communication and to help track certain communication, in the interest of national security.

Now with Nokia, the government demands the implementation of a necessary framework suggested by the telecom and the IT department, a framework that will soon finds its way into the Indian Telegraphy Act of 1885 and the Information Technology (Amendment) Act of 2007. It will also be ensuring operator compliance with demands of security agencies.

Nokia has not responded until this time, and must be busy weighing the available options on how to implement the necessary framework. In the past however, Nokia had said it would cooperate with the Indian goverment, and that its push mail servers would comply with the demands.

Nokia can fully customize Windows Phone 7 platform

Nokia has revealed that the deal with Microsoft enables them to heavily customize the Windows Phone 7 platform on their devices.

However, they are not going to take this route. Instead, they are going to try to make updates that can be sent back to Microsoft for inclusion in the standard WP7 editions so that every operator can benefit from it.

The basic idea is to prevent the fragmentation that is happening in the Android ecosystem. Heavy customization would result in delayed releases of updates.

This means that Nokia would have to differentiate themselves on the basis of hardware quality and features when it comes to WP7 based smartphones.
